Know Why Handheld Devices Use the QWERTY Keyboard
The QWERTY Keyboard is the standard computer keyboard using the Latin-based alphabet. It refers to the first six letters found on the upper row portion of the keyboard. The keys here were devised and designed by Christopher Latham Sholes for his invention of “Type-Writer” which was produced way back 1874. Since then, this keyboard has become the most ubiquitous user interface machine of all time.
The arrangement of the QWERTY Keyboard was intended to minimize the jamming of the type bars as they moved to strike the ink on the paper. Separating the letters on the keyboard actually reduced and minimized the incidence of jamming. Several years later, Mr. August Dvorak made some changes on the original “Type-Writer” as he intended to make it faster by putting five most common consonants and vowels in the middle row. This was done with the idea that this could establish an alternating rhythm between the left hand and the right hand. There were many adherents in Mr. Dvorak’s keyboard but it was never successful in overcoming the culture of typing on a QWERTY keyboard.
Actually, QWERTY Keyboard isn’t the most efficient keyboard available these days. If this is true, then why do handheld devices prefer to use the QWERTY Keyboard when they can actually use a more efficient one?
The answer is simple! It’s all about familiarity. Since the QWERTY Keyboard was introduced, practically almost everybody around the world has been using the same keyboard. Can you imagine using keyboards other than what you were using since you were 2 or 3? Probably not!
So, if you ask the handheld device manufacturers about why they use the QWERTY Keyboard in their devices, they will simply give you a short answer – Efficiency! And for everybody, efficiency is using something that they are familiar with. Handheld devices are used for efficiency and convenience. Isn’t it inconvenient and inefficient to go back to square 1 just to learn and familiarize yourself with a new keyboard? That means twice or thrice longer to type a short message, twice or thrice the effort of saving a number on your address or phone book and twice or thrice the mistakes you make when you are using the QWERTY Keyboard. That’s too much inconvenience and inefficiency!
So if you are fed up using handheld devices with QWERTY Keyboard, you’ve got to ask yourself first if you can accommodate learning to use a new one when in fact, you can type in your QWERTY Keyboard even with your eyes closed! Same thing goes for everyone, isn’t it?
